Mental Health & Pets

How many pets do you have in your home? How many of those pets help you when your mental state isn’t functioning properly? Which pet knows you better than you do and is always by your side when you need them the most?

I currently have 4 dogs, 4 cats, 3 ball pythons and a turtle. A couple of these pets are looking for homes because I am fostering them. I have a 5 month old kitten named Scarface, that lays on my chest when my anxiety is high. I have a 7 year old cat that can always tell when my mood changes and lays on my lap for me to pet to calm down. The strange thing is 1 of my snakes is the best emotional support animal ever.

Elvira, my oldest ball python I have considered registering as an emotional support animal to help me with my anxiety and bipolar when I am in public. The reason I have not is due to the BS of others freaking out over her. She goes to at least 4 local parades every year in my little town. Some people accept her but I don’t need someone causing my mental state more issues and having to argue my point with them.

Do you have an emotional support animal? Most people have dogs registered. I have never seen a cat registered let alone a cat that won’t jump out of your arms and do it’s own thing.

As of right now, I do my shopping late at night or at 3AM so I don’t have to tolerate strangers and the noise they make. Yes noise. I can’t handle when others speak let alone the ones in my own house. Kids screaming in stores and doctor’s offices make me cringe. I have to stand outside and wait till they call my name or wear 3M Noise Reduction Headphones. The bad thing is when I wear the headphones everyone wants to talk to me. Ugh.

I have a pocket pitbull, yes a very rare hybrid breed, that is the sweetest animal. He loves people but because he is ‘pitbull’ there is a stigma just like us with bipolar. His name is Cisco. After riding in a vehicle for 20-30 minutes, he gets carsick. I have very few options as far as a pet to register for emotional support.

I hope others have better luck than I do. Good Luck and stay sane, lol.
