Do you know what anxiety feels like? Well, let me explain to you how it can take over your life. Anxiety affects people in different ways.
Imagine the worst possible scenario that can happen to you. This is intrusive thought. You get caught up in the moment. This is excessive worry. You start breathing heavily and your blood pressure increases. Your chest begins to hurt. Your next thought is that you are having a heart attack. You begin to panic. You can’t concentrate. You get exhausted from the stress of the moment. Someone tells you it is all in your head and you snap at them. This is irritability. You try to lay down hoping to sleep the whole thing away. You have difficulty falling asleep and become restless.
The fact remains, this is all in your head. Your emotions get wrapped up in a single thought that you could not control. Now let’s try to calm down.
Close your eyes. Imagine the safest person or place you have ever been. Focus on that one thing. If it is a person, talk to them and let them talk you to calmness. If it is a place, take in the view, the smells, run your fingers over whatever is there. Take slow deep breaths.
My relaxation place is my childhood home. We had 2-3 acres of land full of trees, a creek and a small farm. What calms me is walking the trails, taking in the fresh smells and beautiful scenery. I hold my arms out and let my fingers feel the trees and branches as I walk to the creek. When I finally make it to the creek, I sit down and let the water run through my fingers. I let the water wash away all negative thoughts and worry as I continue to take slow deep breaths.
I am on anxiety medication for my anxiety. Some days are worse than others. Some days I have to take it one minute at a time and others one day at a time.
If you have another way to help others, please comment below. I would love to hear it. I hope this helps at least one person. Good luck and stay blessed.
